Kimon Greenland (guitar) and Curt Meinhold (bass) began playing together at the tail-end of the 1980s. Both being into such bands as Exodus, Anacrusis, and Meliah Rage, it seemed logical to try and form a heavy metal band. Though they played with various friends and acquaintences, a stable band never came together, and they both headed off in separate directions.
In 1990, Jesse Vena (drums) - one of the people met while trying to form a metal band - contacted Curt and asked if he'd be interested in filling in the bass parts in his band Big Me. They were a twelve-string acoustic act, but he was game, and joined in a few practices before playing the scheduled gig with the band. After the show, Big Me in the market for a bassist who could play "slap", Kimon and Curt re-united and decided to try and give this music thing another go. The year was 1990.
Speeny Bowl Wagon originally began as a nameless entity when Kimon Greenland and Curt Meinhold got together and started jamming. A rehearsal space was procured and soon Ron Gittens was singing over the top of the music progressions that had been pieced together - the band named after a detective that Ron had written into a short story. When they had six songs together, they headed to Powerhouse Studio and had Stuart Covington capture them. Jesse Vena returned the fill-in favor and put together the drum parts for the recording.
After the first demo was done, and Jesse had moved on to bigger and better things, SBW began searching for a full-time drummer. Willie - the security guard at the rehearsal space who always asked you to order him "a treat... something sweet" when you were calling in a beer order - suggested that we contact Todd Berozsky because "he was into weird music too."
