Abiocor console evaluation

SIFT was asked to perform a usability analysis for the control console, focusing on use of the console in the operating suite during implantation of the Abiocor replacement heart.

The AbioCor is the world's first completely self-contained replacement heart. Central to the operation of the AbioCor is the control console, which allows physicians and other users to adjust the operation of the implantable device. SIFT was asked to perform a usability analysis for the control console, focusing on use of the console in the operating suite during implantation. In this mode, the control console must be allowed to command operating parameters (e.g., overriding the pump for brief periods) that should never be available in other operational modes. User studies were conducted in operating suites in Louisville, and analyzed to form recommendations for console redesign.
